Current maintenance in the company is based on traditional
practices and is reactive, i.e., breakdown. It is a
practice that is inherently wasteful and ineffective with
disadvantages such as: unscheduled downtime of machinery,
possibility of secondary damage, no warning of failure with
possible safety risks, production loss or delay, and the need
for standby machinery where necessary.
TPM will enable the company's traditional maintenance
practices to change from reactive to proactive by sharing
responsibility for machine condition, performance and
maintenance. Fig. 1 illustrates the vicious circle of reactive
maintenance which should be broken [1].
