Goh, who retired from Cabinet as senior minister after the 2011 elections, continues to play a leading role in public life. In May, he was appointed Patron for Advancement of the Singapore University of Technology and Design, which will see him drive fundraising and outreach efforts. Besides meeting with foreign dignitaries, including China’s Premier Wen Jiabao and Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis last year, Goh has thrown his support behind Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s call for a national conversation on the country’s future. As Singapore’s second Prime Minister, Goh saw the city state through several crises including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 2011 Singapore embassies attack plot by Jemaah Islamiyah, the 2001 to 2003 economic recession, and the 2003 Sars outbreak. Goh is featured in the newly launched 1,400-page Southeast-Asian Personalities Of Chinese Descent, A Biographical Dictionary, which provides an insight into the lives of those who have helped to shape the region.
