THE UNOBSERVED CAMERA
The appeal of some photographs has as much to do with the fact that they appear to have been taken without the subject’s knowledge as they do with the actual content. The photograph here is such an example, showing the bride, on her way down the stairs to leave the house for the wedding ceremony , pausing briefly to slip a garter onto her leg – a personal act that the camera would not normally be there to record.
Time was critically short at this point in the proceedings, and the photographer had no time to set up a flash, and thus had to rely solely on whatever daylight was entering through the side window. As a result, a slow shutter speed and a large lens aperture had to be used, and the zone of sharp focus-the depth of field- was not extensive enough to encompass the whole figure. Instinctively , however, in the split second that was available for the shot, the photographer made the correct decision and focused on the bride’s face. In almost all circumstances, the most crucial part of any portrait is the face – especially the eyes- which is something to bear in mind whenever you are in doubt about what to focus on if depth of field is restricted
