We will be continuing our examination of policies for poverty reduction throughout the remainder of this text. Appropriate agricultural development policies represent a crucial strategy for attacking poverty because such a high
fraction of the poor are located in rural areas and engaged in agricultural pursuits. Strategies for agricultural development are examined in Chapter 9.
In addition, the poor in urban as well as rural areas suffer from degraded environmental conditions, which lowers opportunities for economic growth and also worsens the health of the poor; these problems are examined in Chapter 10.
