In the theme Acknowledging
Effect of Hearing Distressful Voices, participants
in the study gained an overall
greater appreciation and understanding
of what clients who hear distressing
voices experience on a daily basis. One
student reported, “I have a better understanding
of what a mentally ill patient
experiences.” Another participant refl
ected, “It will help me understand they
are dealing with things I can’t see on the
surface.” The refl ective response of one
student showed her visualizing her role
as a student nurse in a psychiatric setting
when she reported, “I’m anxious to help
people with their mental illness struggles,
even more so having used this simulation.”
The Developing Patience and
Respect theme had common ideas, such
as being more patient in nurse–patient
interactions and making special considerations
for those who hear voices. One
participant wrote, “I will be able to be
empathetic towards those clients who
