The speed of infrastructure development was impressive from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s.
Roads are a good example, as can be seen from Figure 7 which gives the length of general national highways and expressways in 1936-85.
In the early 1950s, road conditions, including paved roads, were very poor but a substantial improvement can be observed for the 1950s, 1960s, and onward. Construction of the national expressways was financed mostly through toll collection, which necessarily forced construction to proceed slowly, albeit without adverse effects on government budget.
