There has been some experimentation to increase catch rates of a variety
of sea star trap models. In 1993, the effectiveness of Tasmanian designed sea
star traps at catching introduced sea stars was looked at by the National Sea
Star Task Force (Anon., 1994). The traps were baited with salmon heads, which
attracted sea stars within an area of approximately 10 square meters. They
found it’s effectiveness to be two to three times greater compared to the
Japanese designed sea star traps, however, sea star species other than the
targeted introduced northern Pacific sea star were also caught.
