Even with these standards in place, formaldehyde exposure in
China remains high. During the period 2002–2004, more than 69.4% of
all newly built or remodeled houses had indoor formaldehyde levels
exceeding the national standard (Table 3). Several studies measuring
indoor formaldehyde levels in recently remodeled residences found
that all sampled homes, with the exception of those in Hong Kong, had
either maximum or average concentrations exceeding the national
standard of 0.1 mg/m3 (Table 4). In contrast, many international cities
have average indoor formaldehyde concentrations well below 0.1 mg/
m3
