Musical improvisation, whether spontaneous or prepared,
is a deeply creative action based on personal
style in making music. That said, is it possible and
reasonable to teach improvisation or would it be better
to leave this area of musicianship untouched? On
which assumptions and strategies could the improvisation
teaching be based? Should it begin with aural
imitation of an instructor’s model performance or
development of higher order thinking skills? Finally,
which musicianship skills could benefit from improvisation
studies and why should they be chosen for
improvement?
