repression of memories and emotions is seldom complete. anger that through repression is bottled up in the unconscious may leak out into thought and behaviour in disguised forms. it still tries to express itself. thus after being humiliated at a party and having an amnesia for what happened, the next time this man meets the person who did this to him, he angrily criticises him at the slightest provocation and resorts again and again to unprovoked sarcasm. he is not able to recognise the true origins of his aggression and he is not able to perceive that his reactions are irrationally excessive.
