A series of studies have demonstrated that rates of
schizophrenia and neurological abnormalities are higher
in the family members of subjects with schizophrenia and
that these higher rates appear to be independent of each
other. Schizophrenia probands and relatives show greater
sensory cortex dysfunction than normal comparison subjects,
substance abusers, and subjects with bipolar disorder;
in addition, subjects with schizophrenia show
cerebellar dysfunction (28).
