It was getting late, and the two of them were heading back home quietly.
Zitao waited patiently until Junmyeon stopped crying. Fortunately, he always brought a spare of handkerchief, which Junmyeon gladly accepted and blew his nose into. Zitao commented nothing but to rub soothing circles on the older male’s back, and it reminded Junmyeon how much Zitao resembled his brother. Which only hurt him more, because the male he loved would never go back to his side...
Junmyeon hummed tiredly. “Are you going back to the military base soon, Zitao...?”
“Next week, yeah.”
“Really? That’s good to hear. I’m glad you have some time to rest...”
“Hyung...”
“Yes, Zitao?”
Zitao unsurely bit his lip, but his gaze to Junmyeon was certain. “I know this is probably not the best time, but... Is there any chance for me to...”
Junmyeon quickly held up a hand to prevent Zitao from finishing his sentence. The younger of the two quickly closed his mouth, a bit shocked at the sudden rejection. Junmyeon knew what Zitao was about to say. All of a sudden, Yifan’s words of ‘please open up your heart for Zitao’ rang in his mind over and over like a broken record. Junmyeon loosely curled his fist against his mouth, feeling uncertain, tired and a bit scared of everything that had happened.
Maybe he should...?
Or he shouldn’t...?
“Hyung, look. The stars are so beautiful.”
Junmyeon followed Zitao’s line of sight to the dark sky and he instinctively smiled, because it reminded him of Yifan. Yifan asked him to always remember him whenever he gazed at the stars. If only Yifan knew that everything reminded Junmyeon of him, and even without him asking for it, Junmyeon would always remember.
Because he would never forget.
Junmyeon looked at Zitao from the corner of his eye. He searched for the possibility for him to love again, to feel his heart beating for another person, for someone other than Yifan. But it didn’t take long for Junmyeon to realize that his heart was screaming with a decision.
Zitao might be Yifan’s brother, but he wasn’t Yifan.
“Zitao, I’m sorry...”
Zitao turned to Junmyeon with a blank expression. His lips curved slightly upward into a sad, understanding smile, because he knew that he would get that answer. There would be no room for him in Junmyeon’s heart, and he knew it from the start. Junmyeon would always think about Yifan, no matter what.
“If it’s not your brother, I can’t...”
***
Junmyeon gazed into the bright blue sky on the next morning.
He remembered his dream, he remembered their love, and he felt so blessed to ever have Yifan in his life.
Because wherever Junmyeon went, Yifan would always be a part of him.
You were right there for me, always...
In my dreams I’ll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart will always be a place for you for all my life
I’ll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am, there you’ll be...
