6. Conclusion and perspective
Chitosan is a biopolymer with tremendous variation in its structure and properties. Agronomic responses of horticultural crops to chitosan application/s showed that each crop responds in a different way based on the chemical composition of chitosan, and the timing and rate of application. Chitosan stimulates various plant responses, including induction of disease and abiotic stress resistance, enhancement of plant growth and yield, and shelf life of flowers and fruits, and activation of secondary metabolite production. The complexity of how plants sense and respond to chitosan has been investigated, and cellular response models have been proposed. However, more information about these processes are needed and as such, this topic warrants further study.
