Infants are apparently more competent than Piaget’s description of the sensorimotor stage suggests. For instance, they show preliminary signs of object permanence as early as 21/2 months old and continue to firm up this understanding over a period of many months (Baillargeon, 2004; L.B.Cohen & Cashon, 2006). Also, by 12 months of age, infants who haven’t yet acquired language can nonverbally communicate about-and so apparently can also think about-objects and events they aren’t currently perceiving or experiencing (Liskowski, Schafer, Carpenter, & Tomasello, 2009; Mandler, 2007)
