Game-based learning environments offer significant potential for STEM education. A key challenge posed by game-based
learning in general, and by narrative-centered learning environments in particular, is designing them to be effective learning
tools in the real-world settings of classrooms. One of the most promising approaches to creating such complex systems is
adopting an iterative approach in which designs are created, implemented, and refined in an ongoing cycle of rapid development
and extensive testing. The end result of this design approach has led to a number of theoretical and practical implications
for CRYSTAL ISLAND with regard to creating environments that combine science content learning with interactive
gameplay.
