A simplified grounding damage prediction method and its application in modern damage stability requirements
Location of commencement of damage (front of damage). If ship hulls were box-shaped and on even keel it would be expected that the front of damage was at the bow of the ship. However, due to the trim and curved shape of ships it turns out that a significant part of the damages begin somewhat aft of the forward point of the ship. This is also assumed to be the case for HSC, which have hulls that are far from box-shaped. The statistics shows that it is most effective that the damage extent in the rule starts from the fore end of the vessel, as this area has the highest intensity of damage.
