The clothes we wear are expensive; they announce that we are police officers or bankers or tourists or college students or at least they show what we want to be thought to be, as when in the 1960s many young middle-class students wore tattered clothing, thus showing their allegiance to the poor and their enmity toward what was called the establishment.
