There were several types of mammoth, all members of the
elephant family. Most widespread was the woolly
mammoth, which ranged across all northern continents and
grew a very. long, thick, hairy.coat to keep out the bitter
coldof the recent Ice Ages. It may have used its long,
. curvingrusks to sweep away drifted snow to get at
plants beneath. This mammoth is known from
mummified and/or frozen specimens in the ice of
Siberia, Northern Asia. Prehistoric Neanderthal people
andthose of our own species hunted
mammoths and used their tusks and bones for building,
tools, utensils and o.rnaments.
