Inspired by the Wuxi vernacular
The concept aims to capture the essence of Wuxi and so create an architectural language which will connect with the rich heritage of the area. The vision was to deliver a scheme which resembled the development of a place over time and spark interest in the design as much as in the programme it would offer.
The Benoy Team undertook detailed façade studies, resulting in the inclusion of a mix of traditional and modern building styles which combine to create a diverse yet holistic design. The composition of the development is, therefore, a blend of locally-inspired low-rise retail shops and larger scale structures which frame the major entrances.
The heart of the scheme is the ‘Pavilion’,
a lantern-shaped, semi-outdoor building which embodies the Wuxi vernacular. The central landmark takes on a organic form and is surrounded by water, celebrating the lantern-lined canals of old Wuxi.
