The MSC’s current requirements (Fisheries Certification Requirements version 2.0) are subject to interpretation in terms of which species should be considered under the Endangered, Threatened and Protected (ETP) requirements; and how outcome and management Performance Indicator (PIs) should be scored when there are/are not national and international limits or requirements for protection and rebuilding.
To ensure consistent and robust fishery assessments, the MSC requirements need to take into account situations in a range of national and international instruments to protect ETP species; and to ensure that requirements and guidance reflect these.
In order to make the ETP requirements clearer, the MSC Executive plans to undertake a study reviewing national ETP legislation from different regions, international agreements, other international groups that might influence management of ETP species. This study will also be used to review the requirements in the next Fisheries Standard Review and draft appropriate guidance on when and how to score an ETP species.
