The Cohen family have always expected their children to attend university. Both parents have their bachelor's and master's degrees. However, due to cutbacks at their father's company this year, there is not enough money for tuition for both their son and daughter to attend university. Their son is 18 years old and wants to be an engineer, while their daughter is 19 and, after taking a year off to travel, is now ready to study for a degree in translation. The Cohens have decided that the answer is community college. Dianne and Jim, the children, can attend a two-year school and then transfer to a university later. This would save a significant amount of money and, at the same time, Dianne and Jim can take all the freshman and sophomore classes they need and transfer the credits. The Cohen family is not the only one making this decision, as research shows that community college enrollment is up nearly 10% from 1988. There are many reasons for this considerable increase.
