DISCUSSION
The results of the present study provide further evidence that higher-fat diets that are high in MUFAs and low in SFAs lower total and LDL cholesterol to a degree similar to that observed for a lower-fat, cholesterol-lowering diet (12–15). Moreover, in agreement with other reports (12, 14), we showed that the high-MUFA diets studied had the added benefit of not increasing triacylglycerol concentrations or lowering HDL-cholesterol concentrations, as the Step II diet tends to.
