Specifically hope that this journey may help us reconsider the ways in which women may have played key roles in the processes of nation-state formation.
Understanding Thailand's unique position in the history of women's suffrage and the importance of matrilocal marriage suggest the possibility of an alternative view of women. placing them not only in the domestic sphere, but also in the public sphere.
More generally, I hope my talk has given you some sense of how anthropological perspectives which are based on a view from the bottom-up experiences of villagers, an understanding of the political significance of kinship. and a willingness to question accepted paradigms can contribute to alternative perspectives to dominant narratives.
