skeletal muscle regenerative capacity is due to the presence of a tissue-specific population of myogenic stem cells termed satellite cells, so-called due to its peripheral location on the skeletal muscle myofibre where it lies between the sarcolemma of the myofibre cell and its surrounding basal lamina.
however, depending on the severity and frequency of the injury, the regeneration process of skeletal muscle is very slow and incomplete, resulting in strength loss, fibrosis and a high rate of re-injury at the site of the prior injury.
