New Trends.
• Are consumers demanding new types of benefits/value/features?
Not necessarily from Vans, but the loyal consumers of Vans products already have a level of expectation that Vans will continue to provide a wide range of versatility and style when launching new products. Other consumers for athletic shoes are looking for what will enhance their athletic ability, be comfortable/durable, and at times “look cool”. This is especially true for such brands as Nike or Adidas, but not so much for Vans. Also, some shoe brands are now targeting women or individuals who wish to get in shape without constantly exercising by introducing “shape ups”, or shoes that work different muscles while you walk than basic shoes.
As our agency discovered in our focus group, not many consumers even consider Vans an athletic shoe, and if it is at all it is related to “extreme” or less conventional sports, like skateboarding. Vans has quite a few different lines out via their shoes to appeal to all the different consumers that wear Vans shoes, from the classical casual fitting shoe to the custom build skateboarding shoe. Consumers seem happy with the position and variety Vans has to offer currently, as well as their position as a company being current and hip.
