Group B proved to be a top-heavy group with both the United States and Sweden beating Brazil and Japan. The United States came into the tournament with their heavily featured “triple-edged sword” (forward attacking line) with Michelle Akers, Carin Jennings, and captain April Heinrichs. Michelle Akers and Carin Jennings led the US and the group with 3 goals each, with future star Mia Hamm and April Heinrichs following up with 2 goals a piece. Sweden lost early to the United States 2-3, but bounced back and asserted its dominance with an impressive 8-0 victory over Japan. Lena Videkull co-led the group in scoring with Michelle Akers and Carin Jennings with 3 goals. The United States, along with Germany, were the only teams in the group stage to win all 3 games. As such, the United States and Sweden both moved on to the knockout stage.
