But the more distinctive feature of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy is its emphasis on the importance of building up self-immunity. Let us give a few examples.
First, greater domestic savings mobilization will not only prepare the country for its pending problem of an aging population, but will also help finance domestic investment, thereby improving our country’s current account position and lessening our exposure to external vulnerability.
Second, promotion of alternative energy sources such as gasohol or bio-diesel will increase our national energy security and help protect our economy from increasingly volatile world energy prices.
These self-immunities, once in place, will lead to an increase in the overall economic resilience of the country.
The second area is the implication of Sufficiency Economy principles for the design of government policy. There are three examples: the mega-projects, the village funds, and the farmer-debt forgiveness program.
