The MFC reactors used for investigating the bioelectricity generation
of two equal chambers made of glass separated by a proton
exchange membrane (5.0 5.0 cm, Nafion 117). Each cell chamber
had a working volume of 300.0 mL with 6.0 cm diameter. Anode
was made of graphite, while cathode was constructed of sheet copper
with effective area of 10 cm2. A copper wire was inserted into
the carbon felt to allow electrical contact with the external circuit.
A fixed external resistance (1000 O) was used to facilitate the comparison
of the electricity production in different treatments (as
shown in Fig. 1). The reactors were operated at 25 ± 2 C.
