A total of 75 Hisex Brown hens at 35 weeks of age were housed in individual cages and given live
isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets containing 0,2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10% spent bentonite clay (SEC) for
16 weeks. The SBC contained 421.41 ether extract kg-‘.
Hen-day egg production, feed intake, kg feed kg-’ eggs, egg weight, egg eompaxnt yields and Haugb
units were not significantly (P>O.O5) affected by dietary levels of SEC. However, hens given 113%
SBCgainedsigniticantly (PcO.05) more thanothersand treatmentsof 5,7.5 and lO%SEtCreduced
slightly egg shell thickness. Overall results indicate that SBC could be included successfoUy in layer
diets up to the highest level ( 10%) used in this study with no deleterious effects on productivity and
egg quality. It is concluded that SBC from palm oil refining that contains a substantial amount of
adsorbed oil can be considered as a potential source of feed energy for poultry
