Although food losses are important in studies of the food packaging system, many LCA on packaging do not take contents and consumer behaviour into consideration. Life cycle assessments that are made to develop new and better packaging ought to include the contents of the packages and the possibilities to minimise food losses. Additional knowledge about the way packaging design affects food losses, as well as quantifications of specific food-packaging cases, is needed. The function of the packaging to preserve its contents should be integrated in future directives on packaging and packaging waste, since losses are important in the life cycle of food.
