The second election leaders held important portfolios:- Goh Chok Tong and Ong Teng Cheong were appointed first and second deputy prime ministers. These two ministers in their mid-fifties were considered to be the "bridging generation" .
In 1985 , Lee's son, Lee Hsien Long was induced into politics. He was appointed as minister of state for trade and industry and minister of state for defense. In 1991 , he became deputy prime minister in the cabinet headed by Lee 's successor, Goh Chok Tong.
