Dear Customer
You may have heard that an amendment is being made to SOLAS (the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea) under which shippers will be required, as a condition for having their packed container loaded onto a ship, to provide the verified gross mass (VGM) of that container to the carrier. This requirement will come into force on 1st July of this year and after that date, it will be a violation of SOLAS to load a packed container onto a vessel without the appropriate VGM.
Infineum has been working with its freight forwarders, sites and logistics companies to ensure that it will be ready to meet this deadline for the shipment of its packed containers.
At this early stage in its implementation, there is still a degree of uncertainty as to the full impact of the SOLAS amendment, and what actions may be taken by vessel and marine terminal operators. Enforcement and weight tolerances will be a matter for individual countries’ legislation and many have still to determine their approach. Infineum will continue to monitor all these developments.
