4. Conclusions
This research successfully synthesized SS/CNT composite feedstock
powder by the CVD method using an ethanol source. This
powder was flame sprayed to form a new SS/CNT composite coating.
Phase composition of the coatings comprised mainly Fe with a higher
content of C compared to that observed in the stainless steel coating.
The remaining of CNTs in the composite coating was obviously seen in
SEM image. Although physical properties in terms of percentage of
porosity and oxide content of both coatings were similar, the
composite coating had higher hardness value and lower friction
coefficient which in turn resulted in a lower wear rate compared to
that of the pure stainless steel coating. This research therefore
suggested a new flame sprayed composite coating based on stainless
steel and CNTs that could potentially be employed as a novel coating
for corrosion applications with improved wear resistance.
