General Sport wheelchairs General sport wheelchairs are the most popular specialized wheelchairs. For many individuals these have become daily-use chairs as well as vehicles for athletic performance. Shown in Figure 27.2(a) is a typical "sport" wheelchair. Major design features are the relatively high seating position, lack of armrests/supports, and the cambered (inward sloping) main wheels. The cambered, 24 inch (0.61 meter) diameter mainwheels make the chair stable and easy to turn, while at the same time making it easier for the athlete to reach and apply force to the handrim to propel the wheelchair.
