In the short run, institutions
cannot lay off
tenured faculty or sell or
demolish their buildings.
In the long run, however,
using hybrid models for
some large introductory
courses would allow institutions
to expand enrollment
without a commensurate
increase in space
costs, a major savings
relative to what institutions
would have to spend
to serve the same number
of students with a traditional
model of instruction.
In other words, the
hybrid model need not
just “save money”; it can
also support an increase
in access to higher education.
