Mangroves grow along the coastline of south China from 181301700 to 30804500 and mainly in Guangdong (41.0%), Guangxi (38.0%), and Hainan (17.8%) provinces (Fig. 1). According to The Mangrove Resource Inventory Report (Ministry of Forestry, 2002), China contained 48,266 ha of mangrove in the 1950s but the area had declined by 54.4% to 22,025 ha in 2002. In addition, the potential mangrove area is 58,848 ha (unoccupied mud flat area suitable for mangrove growth which includes vacant mud flat after deforestation, discarded breeding pond, and newly formed mudflats at estuary) but only 5% of the land has been authorized for the planting of mangroves by the government. The inventory recorded 59 mangrove forest types with 37 species belonging to 21 families. A. marina, A. corniculatum, K. candel-A.
corniculatum, and A. marina þ A. corniculatum were the largest types and accounted for 52.9% of the total area.
