1. Introduction
Arsenic is a highly toxic element and a relatively widespread water pollutant which is thought to be poisoning significant amount of people in various developing countries [1,2]. Longterm exposure to arsenic causes skin, blad derand lung cancer, heart disease and stillbirth [1,3,4]. Inorganic arsenic exists in water mainly in two chemical forms. The major form is the arsenate ion (AsV, H2AsO4 or HAsO4−) but arsenite ions (AsIII, H3AsO3) are formed under more reducing conditions. The latter are more soluble in water and approximately 50 times more toxic than the arsenate ions due to their reaction with enzymes in the human respiratory system [5,6]. The maximum arsenic concentration allowed in drinking water Detection of trace amounts of arsenic in laboratory solutions can be readily achieved by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This is a very sensitive method with a limit of detection (LOD) in the nanomolar range [9–11]. However, such a method is expensive and not appropriate for field detection. Accordingly, there is an increasing need for a portable and sensitive sensor to be developed which gives reliable measurements for the detection of arsenic at low concentrations
