This paper investigates the relationship between listening strategies and listening ability 51 college students learning English in Korea reported their use of listening strategies through a self- report questionnaire, the SEL(Strategies for English Listening). and took an English proficiency test, the TOEIC(Test Of English for International Communication) Findings indicated that Cl) Listening strategies were significantly related to the TOEIC LAC Listening Comprehension), and this relationship was linear: (2) Two variables. integrative motivation and interest. among the four variables integrative motivation. instrumental motivation beliefs. and interest were significantly related to the TOEic LAC and(3) Among the all predictor variables. listening strategies alone uni- quely predicted the TOEIC L C. accounting for 24 percent of the total variance in it. The importance of listening strategy use in listening ability supports the critical roles of language learning strategies in 12 proficiency and has implications for L2 pedagogy.
