Payroll Department
Payroll data are processed in two step: (1) computing and preparing the payroll and (2) distributing the payroll cost to job and department. These steps are performed by a payroll department responsible for recording the job classification, department, and wage rate for each employee. The payroll department calculates hours worked and wages earned, makes payroll deductions, determines the net amount due to each employee, maintains a permanent earnings record for each employee, and may also prepare the payroll distribution showing amounts of labor cost to be charged to each job and department. The payroll department also prepares paychecks or provides the cashier or treasurer with the data necessary to make the payments.
