Once first-level coding was complete, a process known as pattern coding
(Miles & Huberman, 1987) was applied to the segmented data. During pattern
coding, interview excerpts assigned to each of the four efficacy source
categories were reviewed for common themes. The generation of these
categories describing students’ ways of experiencing the engineering
environment was guided by the tenets of phenomenography (Akerlind, 2005;
Marton, 1994; Orgill, 2007). Phenomenography dictates that in the analysis of
data, the researcher develops various categories describing individuals’
different experiences of the phenomenon under investigation. The ultimate goal
is for the generated categories of description to “capture the diversity of ways a
group experiences the phenomenon” (Orgill, 2007, p. 136).
