on Friday afternoon, the day the conference was to begin, Professor Markham arrived to prepare for the reception that was to take place several hours later in the Mississippi Suite. when the Professor went to register at the front desk the clerk replied, “We have no clean rooms at this time.” Realizing that the reception needed to be organized in less than three hours; Professor Markham told the clerk in an authoritative tone who she was and which suite was supposed to be hers for the weekend. The clerk, who was becoming annoyed with the Professor's insistence, responded coldly, “We have no clean rooms. Come back in a couple of hours” Her patience tested, Professor Markham demanded to speak with the front desk manager, and once again explained the situation. The manager only repeated the clerk‘s litany, adding: “You can leave your luggage in the storage room and we can get a single room cleaned for you in a few hours.”
