But what did Liverpool learn?
1) Sebastian Coates produced a terrific performance in the heart of Liverpool’s defence alongside Kolo Toure as the Reds were put under intense pressure at times in the game. It is difficult to see both players featuring much in the coming season but it is great that the club have strength in depth.
2) Full-back positions still look problem areas as Martin Kelly on the right and Jose Enrique struggled to cope with City’s wide men.
3) Rickie Lambert will need more games and I think he should be a plan ‘B’ striker. Brendan Rodgers must buy more strikers to support Daniel Sturridge.
4) Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho looked great and they are going to be important players for the Reds this season.
5) Jordan Henderson’s finishing is improving.
6) Liverpool still have that tremendous work ethic and never say die attitude and they will still be in the mix at the top of the league this season.
