2.2. Field data
Two intensive field campaigns were carried out during the winter
of 2003 and the summer of 2004. The first field campaign took place
between November and December 2003 (referred to as the “winter
campaign”) while the second campaign was carried out between June
and July 2004 (referred to as the “summer campaign”). Different
variables were measured in both campaigns (see Fig. 1 for the location
of observations). Time series of velocity profiles were obtained by
three acoustic Doppler current metres (DOP-1, DOP-2 and DOP-3)
moored in the harbour. Unfortunately, the southern mouth instrument
(DOP-3) was lost during the summer campaign. The set-up of
the Doppler profilers yielded a nominal horizontal velocity precision
of 1.7 cm/s (DOP-1 and DOP-3: AWAC 1 MHz with a sampling interval
of 10’) and 2.06 cm/s (DOP-2: ADP 500 Khz with a sampling interval of
30’). The bin size of the Doppler measurements was set to 0.5 m (for
DOP-1 and DOP-3) and 1 m (for DOP-2).
