Octane ratings indicate the fuels' ability to resist igni tion. The higher the octane, the higher the tempera ture needed to ignite the fuel. Low octane gasolines do not inhibit ignition from hot carbon particles or high combustion chamber temperatures caused by com pression and incorrect ignition timing. This pre-ignition causes knocking in engines.
