Slide 1
Good evening everyone.
My name is Supaporn Pueakthong.
Today I will present about Ambrosia beetle(ชื่อเรื่อง).
Slide 2
- Ambrosia beetles are small beetles, they are beetles of the weevil subfamilies Platypodinae and Scolytinae of Curculionidae family which was classified as Coleoptera.
- First, Platypodinae have a small size at 4-8 mm, they live in the phloem of a tree that is where fungi growing for foods and that caused of phloem are clogged.
- Next, Scolytinae have size at 2-3 mm, they live on bark and bite it for food, we also call Bark Beetle.
- The bark and ambrosia beetle subfamilies Scolytinae and Platypodinae include
7,500 described species, with much of this diversity occurring in tropical regions of the world.
Slide 3
- Foundress beetles tunnel into trees and inoculate their brood gallery with a symbiotic fungus, which is then consumed by adults and larvae.
- Wood-boring ambrosia beetles do not consume the wood of their tree or log hosts, but build gallery systems in which they cultivate fungi as larval food.
- The conventional view of ambrosia beetles' typical hosts is that of unhealthy, physiologically stressed, dying or injured parts of living trees.
- Many ambrosia beetles can also be classified as secondary beetles, attacking a dying or dead host that is already exploited by at least one, often more aggressive and tree killing, primary bark beetle.
- While competition among secondary bark beetles, or between primary and secondary beetles may be severe in the limited, two-dimensional phloem resource in weakened hosts, ambrosia beetles may find such hosts relatively easy targets, because the plants' defense is compromised or lacking, and competition is minimal in the three-dimensional xylem habitat.
- Despite the customary view of ambrosia beetles as secondary invaders, the literature holds examples of some species that are preferential or obligatory attackers of living tress.
- One principal difference in aggressiveness between bark and ambrosia beetles is the relative absence among ambrosia beetles of species that build up large populations in weakened hosts and then attack living trees.
- There have been reports and observations of normally secondary ambrosia beetles attacking apparently healthy, standing trees, and possibly causing the trees' death.
