TrCel3B is the cellobiase in T. reesei with the highest
sequence similarity to Aspergillus b-glucosidases In this
study we aimed to improve the overall ethanol production from
Japanese cedar by combining enzymatic hydrolysis using T. reesei
cellulase with simultaneous fermentation of the sugars produced
by S. cerevisiae. The cellobiase activity required for the conversion
of cellobiose to glucose in the T. reesei extract, however, is poor or
absent in baker’s yeast. Because neither of the yeast can provide the
cellobiase activity required for optimal ethanol production, we
sought different means to make up for this deficit.
