Because trafficking is a covert criminal enterprise, no precise statistics exist regarding the extent of the problem,6 although several organizations have published estimates. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that at any given time at least 2.4 million people are victims of trafficking.14 Dodson15 referred to estimates of “over 27 million enslaved persons worldwide, more than double the number of those who were deported in the 400-year history of the transatlantic slave trade to the Americas.”
