Data Collection and Analysis
First, the reading parts of the national tests and the textbooks were carefully inspected for AE and BE
semantically corresponding words, with the aid of printed and online materials regarding AE-BE
corresponding words, and paper-based dictionaries (the Longman Advanced American Dictionary
and the Oxford Dictionary of English) and online dictionaries (www.thefreedictonary.com and

www.dictionary.com). Each word found was rechecked for its category (AE or BE), definition, and
counterpart, all of which were entered in the Excel spreadsheet. For any AE or BE word that had a
counterpart shown in the dictionaries, its counterpart was underlined in the adjacent column. On the other
hand, for any word that had no counterpart found in the dictionaries, its counterpart was left empty. All
AE and BE words were analyzed and classified based on years of the tests and the textbooks as shown in
the tables below.
