A qualitative research method was used for this research.This method presents a comprehensive
summary andanin-depthanalysis of all elements of an event being investigated(Sandelowski,2000).
The qualit ative method as a primary technique of data collection included:semi-structured
interviews(n¼3 interviewees),in-depth interviews(n¼40 interviewees),secondary data analysis
and participant observation.Data collection was carried out at community and institutional levels in
two phases focusing on agencies and individuals related to the research.
Attheinstitutionallevel,semi-structuredinterviewswereusedtocollectbackgroundinformationonthe
KCA,withrepresentativesofthreeagencies:GWDresponsibleforthemanagementoftheKCA;GHCT
responsibleforecotourismdevelopmentandmanagementintheKCA;andCIwhowerekeycontributorsto
thedevelopmentofecotourismintheKCA.Atthecommunitylevel,clustersamplingwasusedtocategorise
thecommunitiesintofourgeographicallystratified clusters(Fig. 3). Communitieslocatedwithintherange
of 1–10kmaroundtheConservationAreawereconsideredforthisresearch(Appiah-Opoku,2011). The
stratified purposivesamplingmethodwasusedtoselectonecommunityfromeachofthefourclusterstobe
involvedintheresearch,becauseofresourceandtimeconstraints.Fourcommunities – Abrafo,Mesomagor,
AdadientemandNuamakrom – wereselectedascasestudyareas(Fig.3).Thefollowingreasonsinformed
