The older toddler (2 years)
- Is interested in sorting objects according to qualities such as color and shape
- Enjoys arranging three or four objects in order, for example from largest to smallest
- Can tell how many when there are three or fewer objects, and may be learning to recite the number sequence
- Can string large beads, stack 3 to 4 blocks to make a tower, and complete an inset puzzle with 4 to 10 pieces
- Recognizes when something is out of place or doesn’t belong, when something has been added or taken away
- Enjoys playing with toys that present a challenge
- Uses one object to represent a different object (e.g., pretends a block is cookie)
- Enjoys playing with other children and copying their actions but may have trouble sharing toys
- Is interested in caring for pets and helping with simple household chores
- Likes to thing by himself and persists until task accomplished
